RPS Cute - finalizing the demo
RPS Cute development
RPS Cute was my first attempt at game coding!
It was a useful way to learn different mechanics and their input/output, while still learning some stuff about item interactions with the darts and HUD elements. There was about 2 months of work put into the project, up from a straight-up text based Rock Paper Scissors game with smiley faces as sprites.
I'm really happy with the progress me and my wife made for a first attempt at learning a new skill, and I'm excited to take everything I learned into new projects.
GMS2 has been a great learning tool overall. I feel I can tackle Unity and other things with a few tutorials, rather than feeling the blank editor terror that can come along with a new IDE.
Biggest challenges
Persistent information! My .ini writing is sloppy, but I did manage to get a gallery system in. That's probably the only thing I haven't imported into the new game because the code was just so damn sloppy.
However, in doing the final update, I was able to see my old coding style, even if just by a few months. I am excited to take some of the weaker concepts and start re-thinking them.
Using assets
Tearing apart platformer assets from the GMS2 marketplace has been fantastic. I don't end up using a lot of the original code, but having a template to learn enumerations, or clever ways to set and control variables. It's interesting to see which things are similar between engines, and which ones take a different approach for things like drag, friction, etc...
I used the Foxey Platformer Engine and Shooter Game Engine by ETNA Pixel to get a hold on the basics.
Next game
We're getting positive feedback, and our first few Patrons! I'm really excited to see where our work is in the next couple months, and to begin transitioning away from day-job work that is ultimately unfulfilling. Much love to anyone who appreciates independent creators, and other designers who read devlogs to offer encouragement and support.
See you soon!
